WILL DAVIDSON LLP, one of the largest personal injury law firms in Southern Ontario is currently investigating lawsuits on behalf of individuals who have received Ovarian Cancer diagnosis after years of talcum powder usage. Talcum powder is widely used in cosmetic products such as baby powder and adult body and facial powders. The powder is made from the mineral talc and is used to absorb moisture.
What is the link between Talcum Powder & Ovarian Cancer
The link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer dates back as early as 1971. There are numerous studies that show a direct link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer. Researchers have found that applying talcum powder to genitals, underwear, and sanitary napkins increased the risk of developing ovarian cancer by a third. However, despite the evidence of a direct link, Johnson & Johnson has denied such allegations, and has kept their product on the shelves for over four decades without any warning.
Plaintiffs awarded settlements
Johnson & Johnson was the subject of recent litigation in the United States where a now deceased Plaintiff was awarded $72 million dollars. The jury found that talcum powder contained in some Johnson & Johnson powders contributed to the Plaintiff’s ovarian cancer. The Plaintiff used talcum-based Johnson & Johnson powders as part of her personal hygiene routine for 30 years. The jury found that Johnson & Johnson failed to warn consumers of a link between the use of talcum powder for and the risk of ovarian cancer.
In another case, merely three months after the $72 million award was given, a CBC article reported another settlement of $55 million was awarded to a woman in South Dakota who also blamed years of using talcum powder to her ovarian cancer.
Lawsuits are still pending
In the US there are currently 1200 pending lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson. To date they have not issued any warning labels on the talcum powder products. A spokesperson for Johnson & Johnson did not address the link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer, instead he maintains Johnson & Johnson provides consumers with a safe choice for cosmetic products for over 100 years.
