Will Davidson LLP Continues Investigations at Long-Term Care Homes

“We must change the system,” said Ontario Premier Doug Ford during a press conference on May 26, 2020. The rising COVID-19 deaths at nursing homes in Ontario have forced the government to bring in the military to assist staff and management at certain facilities. Ford goes on to say:

“This tragedy must serve as a wakeup call to our entire country and it’s no secret that COVID-19 has taken a system with deep problems, a system that has been neglected for years, and pushed it to the brink. COVID-19 has exposed the deep, deep cracks in the long-term care system. It’s up to us now to fix these problems, it is up to us face the hard truths that have been ignored for decades.”

Will Davidson LLP has been retained to assist clients who believe their loved one’s death was caused by the negligence of management at certain facilities. The firm has currently launched class-action lawsuits against Lundy Manor in Niagara Falls and Orchard Villa in Pickering, ON. Our team is continuing our investigations into the following homes.

  • Altamont Care Community in Scarborough
  • Eatonville in Etobicoke
  • Hawthorne Place in North York
  • Holland Christian Homes Grace Manor in Brampton

A report released by the Brigadier General Commander C.J.J. Mialkowski addresses some of the disturbing conditions military officials encountered when arriving at five long-term care facilities. The detailed report gives account of the horrific condition residents were forced to live in for days. The report mentioned details on, starvation, lack of staff to tend to basic needs, lack of personal protective equipment for staff, and lack off training needed for staff to adequately care for the seniors.

After the release of the report, Premier Ford said government officials knew that the five homes where the military was deployed had reached a “crisis situation” and needed help. However, he said they were not aware of the full scope of the problem.

Prime Minister Trudeau addressed the nation after the release of the report and directed a specific message to people who work, live or have loved ones in such facilities, Trudeau said: “If you’re angry, frustrated, scared, you’re right to feel this way. We can do better. We need to do better. Because we are failing our parents, our grandparents, our elders.”
